The Alsea Valley...
Is encircled by forest covered hills in the Oregon Costal Range. There are natural meadows roaming with cows, goats, chickens, sheep, and wild game to name a few. The Alsea River runs all the way to the Pacific Ocean with epic seasonal Steelhead fishing. You can hear the river running while standing in the fields at Squared Roots Farm. It is medicinal hearing it!
Oregon State University is only 20 miles North in Corvallis and offers a ton of information directed for small farmers. This is an extremely helpful group of master gardeners and such that offer support from livestock to soil testing to dry farming. If you want to know more about OSU's Extension Small Farm Program click here. They are the best!
Getting to Alsea on hwy 34 you pass over very windy roads with giant Douglas firs hitting the highest elevation in the Coastal Front Range at Mary's Peak. Follow our thin windy hwy along the Alsea River through the Siuslaw National Forest heading West and you end up at the Pacific Ocean.
